Passenger Trains

Rio Grande PA1 with the California Zephyr

CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR

The California Zephyr ran between Chicago, Illinois and Oakland (San Francisco) California in the 1950s and 1960s. It was the joint effort of three railroads. Burlington (CB&Q) led the train from Chicage to Denver, Colorado.

The Denver and Rio Grande Western pulled the train from Denver to Salt Lake City, Utah, and the Western Pacific finished the trip to Oakland, California. Passengers could take a ferry across the bay to San Francisco.
